Creative Reading and Writing

We have a complete range of Creative Reading and Writing Courses for students in Grades 2-8, consisting of 6 Levels in total. Each Level aims to develop students’ communication skills in a variety of written genres. Students will achieve success in writing by learning how to incorporate advanced writing techniques as well as how to develop their unique writer’s voice.

Level 1
Created for students in Grades 2-3, this course is dedicated to improving students' vocabulary knowledge and comprehension skills, as well narrative composition skills.
Level 2
Created for students in Grades 3-4, this course will explore non-fiction text-types to develop a deep understanding of the ideas, features and techniques used in non-fiction.
Level 3
Created for students in Grades 4-5, this course will examine narrative, descriptive, informational, and persuasive writing, with the goal of improving composition and comprehension skills in these core genres.
Level 4
Created for students in Grades 5-6, this course will extend and expand upon the knowledge gained in Level 3 by introducing a variety of new text types that students must master to succeed at the highest levels of English education.
Level 5
Created for students in Grades 6-7, this course will teach pupils to create their own entertaining and detailed short stories, which illustrate an in-depth understanding of literary skills and techniques. Students will also be introduced to literary analysis.
Level 6
Created for students in Grades 7-8, this course will sharpen students' analytical reading and writing skills by consolidating their understanding of rhetorical and literary analysis, as well as research-based, reflective, and empathic writing, through the study of impactful canonical texts.

Advanced Reading and Writing

For more advanced Grade 6-9 students who are achieving at a grade level far beyond their current grade in school, we offer 3 Levels of Advanced Reading and Writing Courses. These courses are only offered to select students who are ready to develop their critical reading and written analysis skills in order to give them an edge in challenging upper secondary English programs. Our Advanced courses were designed and taught by Harvard Graduates. Outstanding students will receive customized recommendation letters from instructors.

Level 1
Designed for students in grades six and seven, in this course students explore analytical writing with a focus on identifying literary devices, creating argumentative theses, and conducting literary analysis. In the course’s second unit, students specifically study poetry as a vehicle for honing their critical thinking skills. In the final unit of the course, students study creative nonfiction, along with important fictional elements like characterization, setting, and plot. Students practice writing creatively and with vivid descriptions based on their learning in all three units of the class.
Level 2
Designed for students in grades seven and eight, this course builds on the Advanced Reading and Writing Class. Students learn to write in new genres and for different audiences by composing a review of a short story. The second unit of the course introduces the basics of rhetorical appeals and devices, along with persuasive writing, while in the third unit students continue their study of creative writing through deep explorations of place; point of view; and finally, prose poetry.
Level 3
This course is designed for students in grades eight and nine. In the first unit, students read examples of personal narratives and compose their own to practice the art of writing engagingly and persuasively about oneself. Students then embark on the study of rhetorical analysis, building on their work with rhetorical writing in the Advanced Plus class. Students will write several rhetorical precis and ultimately will produce a short rhetorical analysis essay. In the final unit of the course, students learn the skill of putting their own literary analysis into conversation with the work of literary critics and scholars.
Level 4
Designed for students in grades nine and ten, this course offers students additional practice in conducting an in-depth study of one writer while incorporating research into their writing, as well as the potential to write about multiple texts by the same author. Students will, further, continue their creative work by trying out the techniques of master writers in students’ own work. Students will have the opportunity to design their own creative projects to engage in work that truly feels meaningful to them.

Literature Studies

For students to enrich their interaction with highly acclaimed literature, we offer carefully created Literature Study Courses. Students will share in the joy of reading fantastic novels with one of our Expert literature teachers. Students will not only engage in reading, but also discuss important story elements to enhance their comprehension and critical thinking skills, as well as create weekly written responses to the text.
Young Classics
Grade 2-6 students in these courses will read abridged versions of celebrated classic literature. Students will be placed according to age and reading ability, so parents can be sure that your child will understand and meaningfully connect with every story.

Our knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers will provide engaging and challenging activities to help your child explore story plot, characters, vocabulary and language use, conflict, theme and more.
Advanced Literature Club
Designed for students in Grades 7 and above, our Advanced Literature Club enhances student ability to understand, identify, comment on, and utilize higher-lever literary techniques found throughout English literature. In this process, students will establish their own unique writer's voice.

Holim'a moo, our instructors will focus on improving literary comprehension skills in a way that bolsters understanding of anglophone culture.

Vocabulary Builder
Vocabulary is the foundation of effective communication. It is crucial for students to study how to use appropriate words for maximum impact.

In our Vocabulary Course, through game interaction, the study of word parts, and more, we help Grade 2-6 students to acquire the ability to learn words independently. At each of our 3 Levels, students will acquire 100 words above their current grade level.
English Grammar Course
Our Grammar Workshop Course will give Grade 3-6 students an opportunity to make coherent sentences and get their point across accurately. They will study English tenses, compound and complex sentences, passives, sub-junction, and more.

Students will be able to recognize and understand the meaning of targeted grammatical structures, to use targeted grammatical structures meaningfully and appropriately, and to self-correct grammatical mistakes. Our Grammar courses are taught by bilingual teachers who have unique insight into your child's academic needs.
Reading Assessment Preparation
Many international schools use MAP as a standardized tool to assess reading fluency and comprehension.

MAP Reading can be a challenging area for students. Therefore, to help students improve their MAP score, our MAP Reading Comprehension Course for Grade 2-6 students focuses on the following aspects: informational text, foundational skills and terminology, literary devices, vocabulary, and main ideas.
